Intermediate English Grammar Challenges

Speaking more Naturally

The challenges in this section explore some of the patterns you'll hear every day in conversations. Once you begin to recognise them, you'll find it easier to understand native speakers and express yourself with greater confidence.

Grammar isn't just about rules, it's about understanding the patterns that help you communicate naturally and confidently. The more you recognise those patterns, the easier English becomes.

These interactive grammar challenges are designed for intermediate learners (B1–B2)

So & Neither

When someone tells us something about themselves, we often want to show that we have the same experience. English has short, natural ways of doing this, such as So do I and Neither am I. These expressions appear constantly in conversation and help discussions flow smoothly without repeating the same information.

Tag Questions

Not every question is asked to find information. Sometimes we're simply checking that someone agrees with us or inviting them into the conversation. Tag questions are a natural part of spoken English and help make conversations feel friendlier and more interactive. They're used every day, but the pattern behind them can take a little practice to master.

Stative Verbs

Some verbs describe actions, while others describe states, feelings or thoughts. This difference explains why we naturally say I know, I believe or I love, but not I'm knowing or I'm believing in most situations. When you recognise which verbs describe a state rather than an action, you'll understand why English chooses one tense over another and your spoken English will become much more natural.
